Supporting Democracies

position explained

I believe in a foreign policy that champions the cause of democracy globally, supporting existing and aspiring democratic states through diplomacy, economic partnerships, and moral support. However, I don’t believe in the imposition of democratic governance through military force. We must advocate for peaceful, diplomatic means of promoting democratic values and aiding nations in their pursuit of self-determination and democratic governance.

I do believe the United States has a responsibility to support and defend democracies worldwide, particularly when they face existential threats from authoritarian regimes or external aggression. However, this support should be measured and strategic, focusing on providing the necessary resources—such as weapons and financial aid—rather than committing American troops to fight in another nation’s war.

When democracies are under threat, especially from forces that undermine global stability and peace, it is in our national interest to assist them in their defense. This includes supplying military aid, intelligence support, and economic assistance to bolster their resistance against aggression. However, I firmly believe that American troops should not be sent into combat unless the threat directly impacts our national security or we face a direct attack.

Our support for global democracies should be rooted in the principles of justice, self-determination, and the protection of human rights, without overextending our military involvement. By providing critical support to our allies, we can help them defend their sovereignty and democratic values while avoiding unnecessary entanglement in prolonged conflicts.

This approach allows us to uphold our commitment to global peace and democracy without sacrificing American lives in conflicts that do not directly threaten our nation.
